It all must come to an end

I skipped out on the last two days of blogging. To be honest I needed some time to do nothing! Occasionally I will get to that point. I let the kids sleep in Thursday and I cleaned up the condo, did all our laundry, started the packing process, and spent my time all by myself. We went swimming at the condo pool and visited the park in the late afternoon and evening. My photo taking slowed down and I really tried to soak in the memories first hand. Here are a few pics of it all:

Morning view from the balcony
Our walk back from the pool we had to ourselves
Wildlife to observe while we waited in line for a drink
Second time for ET, convinced Noah to ride with us
Last time walking out of the parks

Leaving the condo for the long trip home

Discovery Cove was amazing! No real photos as the phone was in the locker most of the day due to so much time out in the water. We went around in the wind away river several times, floating through the aviary and the otter and marmoset areas. We played and swam with a 60 year old dolphin named Capricorn. And we absolutely loved snorkeling in the Grand Reef, watching giant sting rays bigger than our whole bodies glide right under us, tropical fish longer than my arm in all colors and designs, and huge schools of fish. All this might have been my favorite part of the trip and something the kids likely will never forget.

Sadly we didn’t know to take our goggles and snorkels to the front at the end and turned them in, finding out right before leaving they get to take their snorkels home as a souvenir if they want. I got on Amazon last night though and they will have a surprise of new goggles and snorkels on the porch when we get home. They are going on a beach vacation to South Carolina in four days after we get home so they should be able to use them.

Now it is one more day of driving and back to normal life, for me at least. I feel so blessed to have my job that affords me this much time away from work and the money to give these experiences to my kids. God really has been so good to me this last year, even when I didn’t understand and things looked worrisome. I think that might be the topic of my next blog.

I have been grateful to have something to write about this last week. And grateful to everyone who has followed along. If you like what you see, I would encourage you to share my blog from my blog page! Til next time!

It all must come to an end

Behind the Scenes

I won’t take you step by step and ride by ride through our entire day yesterday today. The whole day was quite amazing though! Getting the bad out of the way, I will say my feet have been through the ringer. I woke up with some weird things happening in my left foot (maybe some past broken foot pains creeping up). I spent most of the morning only stepping on the ball of my foot.

We utilized our hotel early park admission with an early start to our day, getting on and off our first ride in 15 minutes time. The kids were kind enough to let me ride a couple big coasters and the best part happened right before I went on the Velocicoaster. I wanted to know the fastest way to get to the ride to maximize our time before the park officially opened to the general public.

I asked a team member and she was about to tell us, then she smiled and said, “why don’t you just follow me this way!” She took us back to a gate and down about ten feet to another gate and we ended up right at the coaster. Without struggling through crowds and two lands in the park. This saved us probably 30 minutes of walking, and gave us the coolest behind the scenes experience!

We then headed to the Pternonodon Flyers in Jurassic Kids Park for a ride made for Ada. This ride is unique in that only riders from 36” to 56” inches can ride. They get to take one adult. Ada is one of the lucky few who is above 54” to be able to ride all the rides in the park, and also just under 56” to be able to REALLY ride all the rides in the park. This one took us soring high above all of Jurassic World.

A quick selfie in the jungles

We hit up Marvel World for an early lunch and Noah had time to peruse the best Comic book store he has ever seen. More time afforded to me by my kids to ride the Hulk, my favorite coaster of all time! And back to the car to rest at the condo before our evening.

Posing in our 3-d glasses

I certainly needed this time to rest my feet and even soaked my feet in ice cold water. Ada and I took naps and Noah caught up on new episodes of Obi Wan Kanobi and Ms Marvel.

Six blisters and counting!

A long lived thunderstorm came through and we headed back around 5pm. I made a quick inventory of money before we left and told the kids how much souvenir money they had left. Ada found hers at the Hello Kitty store and it is perfect for her.

Ada and I thoroughly enjoyed ET Adventure and may ride it again today. We are trying to convince Noah to go even though he finds ET creepy. Did the Simpson’s and nearby rides to cover our bases.

We grabbed some churros on the bridge back towards Diagon Alley and bypassed it to ride the Race in New York with Jimmy Fallon. It was easily one of our favorites.

We had 30 minutes until the cinematic light and water show after and decided against going into Diagon Alley. Instead, we got a prime spot, unknowingly on the backside of the show. It did not disappoint though! We will try to catch the whole experience from the right side today.

Noah watching
Ada in awe
The finale right above our heads!!

Easy traffic getting home to the condo, put on the second Harry Potter movie, and the kids had a long FaceTime conversation with their dad. Today we will relax, do some laundry, swim in the condo complex pool, and hit the parks in the evening cooler hours to dedicate time only to interactive wand play, shopping, and maybe a couple quick rides of our favorites.

Behind the Scenes

A Different Pace

Yesterday began much slower than the first day and it made a huge difference. I got up early and went to get some gas (up about .20/gallon since we arrived here a couple days ago), went to the hotel to get our Express passes and what would be our hotel keys once our room opened, and dropped by a Publix grocery store to pick up some snacks and lunch items for the condo. I took a more scenic route back due to a huge backup on the interstate.

Arriving back to the condo around 10:30, we packed up nearly everything (I forgot my main money pouch with envelopes for today and my medicine, but both are okay to be away from for a day. I am going to stop by the ATM at the hotel to grab some extra cash). The kids enjoyed a bowl of cereal while I packed up. I am very happy with my system of bringing a smaller suitcase for our one night stay in the hotel so as not to take everything with us. We will finish our time back at the condo. Ready around 11:15, we made our way to the hotel parking and the water taxi to CityWalk and the parks.

Hopping on the water taxi wands in hand

We took things at a comfortable pace, refilling our cup with ice water many times along the way. We hit up Seuss Landing and all the low key rides there.

Waiting for one-fish two-fish ride

We headed over to Flight of the Hippogriff, a real rollercoaster more Ada’s speed, to ride for our second time and made it on the ride in about ten minutes with our Express Passes. The wait at Forbidden Journey was over 2 hours and I knew Express Pass doesn’t cut that down too much so we bypassed that for another day. Stopped for a quick fruit, Nutella, and goldfish snack break.

Made our way to Hogsmeade Station and took the Hogwart’s Express train over to the other park. Parks were extremely busy so navigating through crowds was a bit stressful. Got into Gringott’s ride and through in about 20 minutes. Ada said it was just as exciting as the first time. While in line we got our text that our room was ready early!

They really love each other; waiting in line

From our slow relaxed pace and the 25 minute wait at the water taxi, we arrived in our room a little after 4pm. I went and got our bags from the car and took a much desired shower. Changed into swimsuits, and headed down for early dinner and swim time.

My first adult drink of the trip!
Some great poolside food
Noah and Ada made a friend from Texas

After an hour of swimming it looked as though storm clouds were moving in. Without that, it may have been impossible to get Ada to leave the huge pool! We went back to our room, the kids took showers and we settled in. We had a great view of the park from our 7th floor room.

Happy for the quiet water canal view

Though my kids love each other and get along well, they are very different from each other. Ada is always on the go and wants more and more activity. Noah on the other hand is laid back and prefers relaxation over a lot of activity. Accommodating both is sometimes a challenge but also a great opportunity to guide both of them in the important lesson of balance. Today I leaned more towards Noah’s mode and we opted not to return to the parks after swimming. Instead we enjoyed a gorgeous sunset.

We watched Dr Strange and we’re surprised by the start of the light show in the park.

Around 8:30pm, everyone was getting hungry so I splurged and we got room service. The kids loved it and felt special.

Lights out at 10pm and plans for a early and long day today. I woke up today at 3:30 and finally headed out of the room so I wasn’t in the dark and the kids were able to sleep uninterrupted. Enjoying a quiet hotel patio!

Planning for a great day!

A Different Pace

Episkey

If it is any indication just how very exhausted we are after our first day at the parks, this post coming two and a half hours after my normal posting time should be a hint. I originally planned to wake up at the crack of dawn and haul the kids to our hotel for early Checkin at 6:30am to hit the parks with Early Park Admission at 8am, Express Passes in hand.

Instead, my kids will stay sleeping soundly for three more hours while I run to get gas, pick up some basic meds for headaches and muscle aches, snacks, basic lunch items, and water, and run by the hotel to get our passes for the day.

Have you ever made a decision as a parent that you believed at the time was right, was gently nudging your children towards something positive that they may not have the foresight to understand? Only to realize you became blinded in your discernment of the signs of what was really happening? What do you do then? Do you charge ahead, certain you were right or at least act like you were right to save face?

Over the last five years of single coparenting, I have learned that sometimes our children need to hear us sincerely apologize and say that we made a mistake. It not only is respectful to them as a human, but I know it is teaching them to be better humans in their lives.

But I am getting ahead of myself. I started with the end of our day and not the start.

We arrived around 7:30am, parking in Purple Spider-Man 451 section of the garage. After taking a quick picture to remember our spot for later, we travelled down the moving walkways and to CityWalk to begin our amazing day. There are two parks at Universal Orlando, Islands of Adventure and Universal Studios proper. We veered to the right and headed to the latter knowing there were some instances regular ticket holders were let in right after Early Park Admission goers.

I snapped a few pics at the iconic globe outside the gates, and a sweet single mother offered to take one of all three of us. She did a great job.

Finally here!!

We waiting patiently, standing back from the lines forming for early admission at 8am. We were taking today slow and steady, enjoying our surroundings. At promptly 7:59am a person stepped out and projected across the small crowd, “If you are here for early park admission, that will be over at Islands of Adventure park. This park opens at 9am.” Amid groans and despair of many waiting in line, we exited back to CityWalk.

Knowing we really only cared to start in the US park to see Diagon Alley just as Harry Potter started his journey, we had some time to kill. So we decided on some highly recommended breakfast, at Voodoo Donuts.

Still with smiles
So many choices
Bigger than life donuts

Taking our bigger than one hand sized donuts and bottle of water back to the gates, we marked our spot in line and sat down to enjoy. This was the last water I bought before the end of the day, something I thoroughly regret.

On to Diagon Alley, but first we slipped over to Minion Mayhem right inside the gates and got in with no wait. We stopped off to have an animated conversation with the Knight Bus voodoo head. Again a nice family offered to swap taking each other’s photos.

Look closely and you’ll see him in the window
Didn’t succeed in entering the visitors entrance to the Ministry of magic but listened to an interesting message.

Entering Harry Potter world, we first went into every shop we could, taking it all in. We saw Weasley’s Wizarding Wheezes among others.

One shop we found our first souvenir for Ada, a Hufflepuff pin, so everyone “would know she was a real Hufflepuff.”

It is official
Super proud!

We eventually made our way to Gringott’s Bank for the first HP ride in our adventure, and were dazzled by the details.

Ada later read there were 62,000 crystals in the bank’s chandeliers. The ride was fantastic and fueled our excitement for the day. We perused more shops and made our way to the Hogwarts Express at Kings Cross Station, platform 9 3/4.

Chocolate Frogs!

We entered Hogsmeade and made our way to the Three Broomsticks for lunch. The lines were long but moved quickly. You stand in winding lines for everything we found out. Noah had the rotisserie chicken, spare ribs, potatoes and corn on the cob. I had the beef pasties with garden salad, and Ada had chicken fingers. We ordered it with the grapes and applesauce but it came with fries, so they corrected it and she got both. Noah and I opted for frozen butter beers and Ada got the original.

Yummy!!

With the heat of the day bearing down on us and ready for a break, we headed to Ollivanders to have our wands choose us. Ada was chosen by Luna Lovegood’s simple shirt wand with a fluted flower as the handle, and Noah was chosen by the noble Albus Dumbledore’s Elder Wand (will get pics today as we were starting to slow down on pictures and focus on making it to the car).

After a welcome break back at the condo, and missing the rain storm in the parks, we returned to Islands of Adventure just as rides were starting back up. We took advantage of a short queue for the Amazing Spider-Man ride and finally headed for Ada’s first ever real rollercoaster, The Flight of the Hippogriff.

Ready to go!
Right after

We jumped over to HP Forbidden Journey with a short wait time and bumped up the intensity with a topsy turvy experience there. Ada’s confidence was building, but still cautious.

We saw the shortest wait time so far for the most sought after HP ride in the park, at 75 minutes for Hagrid’s Motorbike Adventure. It was 7:15, meaning we would be finished around 8:30pm in time to wind down and watch the Hogwart’s castle light show before heading home.

And this is where all my good sense parenting went out the window. Knowing this ride was possibly a one time opportunity and a step up from the Hippogriff rollercoaster, I encouraged and urged us onward. Shortly after getting in line, Noah let me know his head was starting to hurt. Ada was getting more and more introspective as she saw elements of the ride whizzing past.

We committed to the wait and wound through the area, seeing Hagrid’s Hut.

Tired but present

And I got a great picture of the castle.

Like a postcard!

But then we entered some cavelike tunnels. The lights flickered for effect and the sound reverberated everywhere. In front and behind us were lively park goers, yelling and playing around. Noah’s look started to change from pleasant to agonizing as his headache worsened. Ada was exhausted. But once we were in the cave tunnels, we didn’t have any way but through.

The kids and I powered through and made it to the front. The motorbikes and sidecars come through next to a moving walkway to get on. It is a quick process to get in, pull the locking bar down and head out for the ride. I made sure Ada was secure and asked Noah in front if he was good. Then I asked Ada, “Are you ready for this?” She looked up and said “No, no I am not.” Thinking it was a joke, I carried on and said “Here we go! Just hold on! You’re really doing it! Riding a coaster.”

It went SO fast, it went backwards, and around tight corners, and even dropped the whole track in a surprise. As I looked over mid ride, I saw Ada hunching over, hands over her face, ready for the ride to be over. We made it and Ada looked up with tears in her eyes, “I realized I am NOT ready for real rollercoasters. I wasn’t joking mom when I said ‘No. No I am not ready.’“

My heart sunk, and I saw Noah and his head hurting him even more. I stopped them just outside the ride and said, “Kids, I am so sorry. I made a mistake and didn’t listen to the signs you were giving me to turn around and pass up this ride. I feel bad that I pushed you to go forward.”

We grabbed our things from the lockers and headed to the closest place to fill the souvenir cup. The kids waited in the shade while I got ice water and we slowly made our way to the front of the park to leave, taking several breaks because Noah was in a lot of pain and feeling light headed. Just before the exit to the park, I stopped in guest services and went to the First Aid because I wasn’t sure he would make it all the way to the car without passing out.

We got some Tylenol for Noah and directions on rehydrating and avoiding heat exhaustion. Ada stayed quiet and let me tend to Noah. After several more walking breaks along the way, we made it to our car and air conditioning. Noah reclined the seat all the way back and rested as we drive back to the condo.

It was then I decided I wouldn’t wake the kids at 6am the next day to start out the gate with Express passes and much to do. Ada and I talked about some of the lighter rides we could do the next day, and we scratched the big coasters from the list. My kids are so thoughtful and caring that they said they didn’t want me to feel bad, and they wanted me to still get to go on the big coasters during our visit.

We made it back and everyone started recovering, though Ada couldn’t shake the constantly feeling as though she was moving or floating or spinning all the way up to bedtime. I remember that feeling as a kid after an amusement park all day.

On to the next day and better choices. Continual water, smaller rides, and some interactive wand play on the horizon. Many good life lessons learned… by me.

Delays or Distractions

Day two on the road. Today we travelled from Jackson, MS to our arrival at Celebration, FL. Our day started out with a great warm breakfast at the hotel.

Both flavors were great

We packed up, did a few extra sweeps of both rooms and got on the road just before 8am. Today was our long day on the road, estimated at 10 and a half hours. We returned to the same scenery of tall trees towering on each side of the road.

I turned on Imagine Dragons once more while the kids got settled into their electronics. Pretty soon we were out of Mississippi and into Alabama. Here around Mobile, we caught our first glimpse of the Gulf. Hit some traffic and had a quick detour through town and across a pretty cool bridge. My kids snapped pics of the bridge and a very cool Alabama battleship (will add visual when they wake up).

At the three and a half hour mark, we crossed the border into Florida and noticed a few taller palm trees along our route. We saw and nearly missed darker storm clouds with lightning to our north.

Traffic slowed some during the downpour of rain. My son put away his laptop and paid attention. I remember being a kid and always paying close attention when my parents would drive through heavy rain, like my watching was making them see better. Thankfully, my car faired well in the first real test of heavy rain.

It was wild to go from sunshine to pounding rain and back to sunshine. I noticed this rain didn’t have much wind to it like in Oklahoma, and fell straight down in buckets. A few times sun shone on the road from the west as clouds and rain were directly over us.

The rain cleared up and we decided unanimously to delay our journey for the opportunity to walk in the ocean at Pensacola. The tide was high but the sand was white and not scorching to our feet.

Happy to be out of the car
She loved the water, wanting to jump in and stay.
Right before a big wave
I couldn’t see my screen in the sunlight so took this blind. Dang flip flop!

Returning to the car with sand covered feet and weighed down by pockets of interesting shells and rocks (Ada’s doing of course), we cleaned off with one of our beach towels and made a quick pit stop before being back on our way.

The kids made a great discovery at this gas station of 10 feet long charger cords, one for the iPad and one for the jet pack. Taking some souvenir money, we spent $20 and added comfort to the rest of our trip.

The rest of our journey was eventful with construction delays and one truck wreck that delayed our trip about an hour altogether. Building boredom and anticipation prompted putting on a movie around 4 and a half hours left to go.

We watched The Amazing Spider-Man from my phone mounted on the dash. I listened along while focusing on the heavy traffic. It certainly did the trick and made time go by quickly. With and hour and a half left, we started Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

Both happen to be related to Universal as there is a Spider-Man ride and the Chocolate Emporium just outside the park. We plan to try and stop by for some Wonka bars.

Our movie ended with five minutes left to go. Nightfall had set in and with the time change, it was now 9:15pm. The town of Celebration is a destination to itself, with quirky and quaint sites to see. We walked up to the condo located just above Celebration Tavern and successfully gained entry. Got everything from the car in a single trip and set the thermostat to cool.

Quickly, I found out nearly all good places had closed or were soon closing. I switched my search to fast food and found a McDonald’s a couple miles away. I left and had a very silent drive to pick up much needed food. It really hit the spot for all of us.

We turned on Raya and the Last Dragon on Disney+ in our Disney themed condo while we ate and decided on our sleeping arrangements. As kids went to take showers and baths, the rain returned as though it was following us. It was torrential downpour and had me questioning the flimsy emergency ponchos I bought for the trip.

The rain was very heavy but the heat held strong

We pulled out the hide-a-bed downstairs for Noah, prayed, and I left all organization of things to take to the next day. We were wiped out. Surreal feeling being here already even though it was such a long journey. Feeling absolutely blessed to be having this experience with my kids.

Delays or Distractions

3…2…1…and we’re on our way!

Countdown to leaving

For Christmas, in lieu of presents and with my kids’ blessing, I instead pooled the Christmas money with vacation savings for an epic vacation. It had been four years since our 3 day Disney World trip so I wanted to make it count. The kids had no idea where it was we were going until Christmas so there was still an element of surprise.

I wrapped a countdown timer carefully set to go off at 8am June 4th. I put the timer counting down the seconds into the box and wrapped it with Harry Potter themed wrapping paper. I thought it would be a dead giveaway but eventually had to tell them we were headed to Universal Studios in Florida in 167 days. Let the excitement begin!

Mid-Spring I did have to add an hour to the timer due to daylight Savings time, but other than that the timer was spot on. It sat in our living room as a constant reminder and anticipation built as the number became smaller and smaller. We had a movie marathon weekend of Harry Potter and then started reading a few chapters a night of the Harry Potter book series. That might have been the most exciting part of this whole vacation, before it even happened.

Picturesque clouds from Louisiana

I planned meticulously, purchased tickets and made lodging plans. I budgeted and saved, and decided on an all cash envelope system for food, gas, and souvenirs. We made it out the door as the countdown hit zero. First big hiccup was realizing while the charger from my son’s Occulus did charge the Mifi jet pack, the other side connection was also a USB-C and would not charge in the car. We were working with limited juice.

The kids graciously accepted this fact and we were on our way. We listened to Imagine Dragons on Spotify for about ten minutes before switching over to finishing up some episodes of the Great British Baking Competition. Noah had a brief interlude of playing Gumball’s “We’re on our way” song which had us all cracking up.

Switching back to music, we spent a long time in Texas, getting gas and Chick fil A on the other side of Dallas. I happened to pick the one exit under construction for miles and made a quick detour through the Wal-mart parking lot to get to the restaurant. Glad I adjust the gas budget to include more for this trip as average prices are around $4.50/gallon right now.

Our second stop for gas and bathroom breaks was outside Shreveport Louisiana. The drive through the trees was beautiful. I needed a little more active listening, so I switched Spotify over to NF while Noah logged onto this laptop for Minecraft and watching livestream of the Fortnite live season finale event. Ada alternated between her app to document all the different license plates we saw, games, and sleeping. We have found 26 states so far!

Just as we were about to cross the Mississippi, Noah and I heard a loud pop like the side of a pop can popping out in the trash can. A minute later, Noah noticed a small bullseye crack on the windshield on the passenger side. I knew we would have a few not-so-great things happen, so this was one of them. I called my Dad and confirmed it would be okay for the rest of my trip and I could deal with it back home.

Coming into Mississippi after crossing the River

The scenery got even better after the Mississippi River. Our GPS said under 30 minutes and our jet pack finally started beeping low battery. The Wifi held up until the end of our day though, so we weren’t deterred with the charger cord fiasco. We made it to our hotel room, ordered pizza for delivery and turned on the TV to find Jurassic Park playing.

Ada snuggling in after a long day driving
Noah connecting to the internet and games at the hotel

After some yummy Pizza and cheese sticks from Pizza Hut, we changed and headed down to the pool. The water was warm and the pool wasn’t in the direct sunlight. When we arrived there was only one other boy and his mother in the pool. Noah managed to get my sun hat off and dunk me. We splashed until a truce and then dunked until another truce. Ada and I floated on our backs. I got out and let the kids play some more and got some great pictures.

Ada challenging Noah though the truce had already been made
Vacation has begun finally!
I love how they love each other completely!

Soon a couple of families with small children came and the pool was getting crowded. I convinced the children to end our swimming without much opposition, though Ada would have stayed hours. We came back to the room and saw Secrets of Dumbledore was playing. Ada called the first to change and slid the barn-style bathroom door shut. When she came out she struggled with the weight of the door when the entire door fell off the track and came crashing down on the wall across from the bathroom.

Noah and I together were able to lift up the extremely heavy door and get the wheels back on the track. I realized that one wheel was very loose whenever the door was shut to the bathroom. We finished changing without closing the door again and I went down to the front desk to let him know of the damages and what happened.

The front desk attendant was great and wished he could have comped our room for the night but I had already paid. In fact, I used my one reward night from booking ten hotel nights through Hotels.com so I had only paid $30. In place of that, he moved us to two neighboring king size suites. We spent the rest of the evening in one watching the movie and relaxing, and then I prayed and said goodnight to the kids in the other. This worked out well so I could stay up a bit later (though not much later as I was exhausted from nine hours driving) and wake up at my usual time of 4 hours after I go to sleep.

And so you find me here, on the couch of my spacious room at 4am excited to blog about our trip! We did pretty good on gas budget but food budget was a bit skimpy as I was trying to save most on travel days. I may adjust some from souvenirs budget to cover the difference.

Now to see how long I will wait in the quiet of this early morning to wake the kids and make the second leg of our journey to Celebration, Florida!

All the space I had in my own bed
